I searched for the word ‘Housewife’ in my 15 published books, and it only occurs once, in the following passage:-

…At seventeen, I was working, doing what I’m doing now. By nineteen I’d retired. I was a kept woman. I was a mother.

A housewife. Well, not a wife. Not even common-law at that stage, I don’t think.

And we didn’t have a house. We rented a flat above a video shop on the main road in Drescombe.

All that considered, I don’t know what I was. Whatever I was, I went the way of video shops.

Yes, I’ve lived a blockbuster of a life.
